Biography & Genealogy: | Francis Henney Smith Morrison. Genealogy: Born June 9, 1864, Lexington, Virginia. Father: James H. Morrison (VMI Class of 1860 and Professor). Mother: Frances Henderson Smith. Grandson of Francis H. Smith, VMI's first Superintendent. For additional genealogy see the record of James H. Morrison. Francis H. S. was born at the VMI Superintendent's residence, three days before General Hunter's troops burned VMI; it was because of his mother's condition that Hunter spared the house. Education: Attended VMI for 9 months, from July 26, 1880 to April 28, 1881. Subsequently attended neighboring Washington & Lee University, from which he received a law degree in 1887. Career: Lawyer; for many years worked in legal department of the Life Insurance Company of Virginia in Richmond, VA and New Jersey. Marriage: To Bertha Louise Cline, daughter of Charles A. Cline of Leesburg, VA, on September 29, 1890. Children- 4 sons- 1. Francis Henney Smith Morrison, Jr. 2. Charles B. Morrison (died Richmond, VA, December 16, 1919). 3. Henry Terry Morrison (VMI Class of 1920). 4. Screven Henderson Morrison (VMI Class of 1925). Death: At East Orange, NJ, on March 6, 1929. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. |
