Grandfather- William Nelson; Pat. Grandmother- unknown. Mat. Grandfather- John Wills; Mat. Grandmother- unknown. Married- On Jan. 2, 1904 to Charlotte Campbell, daughter of Major Duncan S. Campbell and Ella Calvert. Children- Ella Calvert Nelson. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 11, 1862; Resigned Dec. 24, 1862 because of ill health; Re-Entered Sept. 8, 1866 after War service and attending some classes at University of Virginia; Graduated July 3, 1868 ranking 2nd in a class of 11. Military Record: Probably the "Robert E. Nelson" who in Feb. of 1864 at age 16 sought appointment as clerk in Treasury Dept. and who on April 16, 1864 enlisted in Co. D, 1st Battalion, Va. Reserves. Promoted to 2nd Lieut. May 31, 1864. Resigned July 23, 1864. At an unknown date and place he enlisted in Co. L of Col. J. S. Mosby's Regiment of Va. Cavalry. Paroled at Columbia May 4, 1865. Careers: Asst. Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosphy (Physics) and Latin at VMI 1868-69. Professor of English and Physics at the University of the South 1882-83. Also worked as a Civil Engineer. Died- May 24, 1922.|
