Grandfather- Joseph Mayo; Pat. Grandmother- Jane Poythers. Mat. Grandfather- John Campbell; Mat. Grandmother- Eliza F. Murphy. Married- 1st- on May 19, 1857 Mary Lewis Stovin of Airley, Fauquier Co. Va., daughter of Charles James Stovin and Elizabeth Bland Mayo. 2nd- on Oct. 30, 1866 Ellen Jackson Tyler of Westmoreland Co. Va., daughter of Dr. Wat. Henry Tyler and Jane Blake. Children- 1- (From 1st Marriage) Rev. Charles James Stovin Mayo; 2- (From 2nd Marriage) John Tyler Mayo; 3- Joseph Mayo. (there were two other children from 1st Marriage who died in infancy- names unknown) VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 31, 1849 as 3rd Classman (Sophomore); Graduated July 4, 1852 standing 9 in a class of 24. Also attended University of Va. 1853-54. Civil War Record- On June 3, 1861 Register as Assistant Surgeon in Capt. R.M. Anderson's Va. Light Artillery (1st Co. Richmond Howitzers); Assigned to General Hospital at Camp Winder in Richmond in Feb. 1863; On duty with ambulance train in spring and summer 1863. No further war record found. Careers- Physician; practiced in partnership with Dr. Wat. Henry Tyler (his father-in-law) until 1857; practiced in Westmoreland Co. Va. after the war until his death. Died- Oct. 19, 1871 in Westmoreland Co. Va.|
