Born- Sept. 16, 1845 in Bedford Co. Va.
Father- William Henry Witt; Mother- Rebecca Grigsby.
Paternal Grandparents- John Witt and Mildred Howard; Maternal Grandparents- Etchison Grigsby & Sarah "Sally" S. Turner. Marriage: To Frances "Fannie" Triplette Bond on Dec. 12, 1866.
Children- 1- Rosa Lillian "Lily" Witt, married Ernest Claude Marshall; 2- James Eugene Witt, married Eula Adams; 3- Luther Henry Witt, married Eva Rice Goode; 4- Eva Mae Witt, married Vincent H. Witcher; 5- Mary Alice Witt (died in her teens); 6- Frances "Fannie" Elizabeth Witt, married Edwin Ellis Lloyd; 7- Bertha Irene Witt, married Walter Wave Wingo; 8- Howard Bond Witt, married Mrs. Golda "Dove" Thrasher.
Entered VMI- Nov. 3, 1863; served with the Corps of VMI Cadets in the Battle of New Market as Private in Co. D; resigned cadetship Feb. 6, 1865 to join the C.S.A.; Made Honorary Graduate of the Class of 1867 July 2, 1875.
Civil War Record: He wrote in 1904 that "after resignation of cadetship in Spring of 1865, I enlisted in Smith's Artillery [Bedford Co., VA]....I was furloughed home preparatory to entering army, and before expiration of furlough Gen. Lee surrendered."
Career: Teacher & Principal of the Witt School.
Died: May 8, 1936 in Lynchburg, Va. Buried at family cemetery in Bedford, Co. Va.|
