Genealogy: Born February 5, 1834 at "Kirnan," Westmoreland Co., VA. Parents: Robert Mayo and Emily Ann Campbell. Paternal grandparents: Joseph Mayo, b. Powhatan Co., VA, and Jane Poythress. Maternal grandparents: John Campbell (an attorney, b. Scotland), and Eliza Murphy. Married Mary Armistead Tyler (b. Oct. 19, 1846, d. 1926), daughter of Wat H. and Jane Blake Tyler of Westmoreland Co., VA on Feb. 20, 1868; Children: Emily, Wat, John, Robert George, Agnes, (Jane & Philip died in infancy). VMI Record: entered VMI on July 31, 1849 from Westmoreland Co., as a third classman (sophomore) and graduated July 4, 1852, standing 3rd out of 24 graduates. Military Record: Civil War- Colonel, 3rd Virginia Infantry Regiment. Career: Lawyer, editor ("The South," in Richmond, VA; "South Side Democrat" in Petersburg, VA). Member VMI Board of Visitors, 1860-1861 & 1873, 1874. Two brothers attended VMI- John C. Mayo, Class of 1852, and Robert M. Mayo, Class of 1857. Died April 11, 1898, Westmoreland Co., VA.|
