Biography & Genealogy: | Thurman Alexander, Class of 1867: Born- 1845. Matriculated from Lynchburg, Va. At VMI 10 months over 2 years (entered as 5th year freshman). Military Record: Entered VMI January 1863. Left school that December when (he wrote in 1912) he "was taken with the war fever and left for the front." Enlisted February 1, 1864 at Lynchburg as Pvt, Company B, 2nd Va Cavalry (bounty) Absent sick summer 1864. To hospital (Lynchburg) March 1865. Paroled there April 13, 1865. Post War Career: In Missouri 1869-70. Railroad surveyor; wood manufacturer/inspector; "feed trade"; fire chief. Back to Lynchburg where in 1883 he was appointed fire chief. (Had been volunteer fireman 1861-62). Married Mary A. Sanderson 1887. Died- November 1923. |
