Biography & Genealogy: | Rosser Saunders Rock, Class of 1867: Born- March 1, 1847. Matriculated from Columbia, Va. At VMI 1 year. Military Record: Entered VMI August 1, 1862. Enlisted September 4, 1863 at Richmond for war as Private, Lt J. Guerrant's Company Virginia Light Artillery (Goochland Light Artillery; Capt J. Talley's Company; Capt J. Talley's Company; Capt J.H. Guy's Company). Bounty. Detailed as orderly for Col S. Crutchfield. Wounded in Action (pelvis) and captured April 6, 1865 at Sayler's Creek. In US hospitals, Virginia and DC until released on oath June 14, 1865. While in hospital met US President Abraham Lincoln who was visiting sick and wounded. Only VMI alumnus known to have shaken hands with Lincoln (if there was another, it was probably E.C. Carrington). Post War Career: To Evansville, in c1870. Alive in 1919. Died- ? |
