Biography & Genealogy: | Griffin Wingfield, Class of 1867: Born-September 26, 1846. Matriculated from Salem, Va. At VMI 1 year and 4 months (repeated freshman year). At Roanoke College 1857-1859. At VMI August 26-Dec 29, 1863. Ran away from VMI when denied permission to go home to check on family after US raid in area. Military Record: Unofficial source says he served with local militia (probably 157th Militia Regiment) and then in 2nd Va Cavalry. Only official record shows as Private, Company C, 2nd Va Cavalry on early 1865 post return at Salem. On furlough January-February 1865. Post War Career: Lawyer; miner;public official. At Roanoke College 1865-1867. At UVa 1871-1872. Admitted to bar 1873. Elected judge, Roanoke County Court 1874. Served 17 years. Then served 4 years as commonwealth's attorney; then 5 as clerk of circuit and county courts. In Spanish-American War as Captain, Company H, 2nd Va. Mined iron ore and served as postmaster at Salem. Married Claudine Bokker (1878). Republican (after 1896). Mason. Knight of Pythias. Episcopalian. Buried East Hill Cemetery, Salem. Died- February 10, 1930. |
