|Biography & Genealogy:||Gibbons Alfred Ringgold, Class of 1867: Born- August 6, 1846. Matriculated from Rome, Ga. Entered GMI in 1862. At VMI August 21, 1863-July 29, 1864. Military Record: Helped guard POWs and build fortifications at Atlanta, Ga. Enlisted at Rome, Ga March 6, 1864 for 3 years or war as Private, Company G, 1st Georgia Cavalry. Captured July 21, 1864 near Atlanta, Ga. (some records show July 22). Escaped from POW train in Indiana. Arrested in civilian clothes and held in State Prison until September 1, 1865 (jailors did not know he was escaped POW). Official service record shows that he died July 31, 1864 attempting to escape from POW train. "Doubtless the officer in command of the train had to explain officially why he had lost one POW en route." Post War Career: Moved to Missouri in 1867. Alive in 1933. Died Shelbina, MO, 1932.|
