Grandfather- Richard Garrett; Pat. Grandmother- Anne Major. Mat. Grandfather- John Hamondson Winder; Mat. Grandmother- Comfort Quenton Gore. Married- On April 29, 1896 to Harriet Guion Nicholls, daughter of Francis Tillow Nicholls, former Gov. of Louisiana. Children- 1- Caroline Winder Garrett, who married George P. Dillard; 2- Van Francis Garrett; 3- Suzanne Yeardley Garrett (Mrs. Sclater Montague), born 13 May 1905; 4- Harriet Nicholls Garrett. VMI Record: Entered VMI- April 22, 1863; Resigned to enter Confederate Service Jan. 25, 1865; Made Honorary Graduate of the Class of 1867, July 2, 1869. Military Record: Private in Co. B of VMI Corps of Cadets in the Battle of New Market, May 15, 1864; served with Corps of Cadets in the trenches in Richmond; hospitalized in Richmond with scabies Nov.-Dec, 1864; Resigned Jan. 25, 1865; unofficial source says he joined "Thompson's Battery" (Capt. J. H. Thompson's Co. in the Va. Light Artillery), but no official records of post-VMI service found. Careers: Graduated from University of Va.; received M.D. from Medical College of New York; Physician; Professor of Chemistry at William & Mary College. Died- Nov. 19, 1932 in Williamsburg, Va.
