Genealogy: Born- May 25, 1833 in Page County, VA. Father- Col. Samuel Gibbons of Luray, Page County (b. 1806 m. 1829 d. 1870); Mother- Christina Miller from Rockingham County, VA. Paternal Grandfather- Isaac Gibbons (b. 1757 d. 1826); Paternal Grandmother- Mary Gangwer (b. 1760 d. circa 1851). Maternal Grandfather- Henry Miller, Jr.; Maternal Grandmother- Mary [maiden name unknown]. Married in 1855 Fanny Shackett, daughter of Samuel Shackett of Harrisonburg, Va. No children. VMI Record: He was the oldest of three brothers who attended VMI (William S. Gibbons and Alfred R. Gibbons). Simeon entered the third (sophomore) class at VMI on July 21, 1849; Graduated July 4, 1852 standing 7th in a class of 24. While at VMI he was a member of the Society of Cadets, a literary organization which encouraged public speaking, declamation, reading and writing. Gibbons was a first classman (senior) when Maj. Thomas J. Jackson (later "Stonewall") joined the VMI faculty. Career: Civil Engineer, Teacher, Merchant, VMI Board of Visitors 1859-60. Civil War Service: Capt. of Va. Volunteers; Col. of 10th Va. Infantry. Died- May 8, 1862- Killed in Battle at McDowell, Va. |
