Biography & Genealogy: | John Edward Foster, Class of 1867: Born- May 11, 1845. Matriculated from Mathews Court House. At VMI 1 year, 3 months; repeated his fourth class (freshman) year. Military Record: May have served with the 61st Virginia Militia 1861-62; at VMI September 4, 1862-July 4, 1863 (resigned), then again from January 20-April 19, 1864, after which he was dismissed; unofficial source says he left VMI to join cavalry; no official record of such service found; enlisted as a Private in Captain T. Kevill's Company of Virginia Artillery (originally Company C, 19th Battalion of Virginia Artillery); may have served briefly with unit in 1862; on detached service October, 1864; on rolls as Prisioner of War at the U.S. Hospital at Farmville April 7-June 15, 1865. Post War Career: Sea captain. Died- May 13, 1896. |
