Biography & Genealogy:Thomas Hamner Dennis, Class of 1867: Born- Feb. 20, 1846 in Charlotte County, VA. Matriculated from Coles Ferry, VA. At VMI 6 months over 2 years; dismissed for hazing a rat. Military Record: Enlisted March 1, 1864 at Charlotte Court House for war as a Private with Company B, 14th Virginia Cavalry ($50 bounty); present for duty through 1864 (last return on file). Post War Career: according to an unofficial souce, he was a student at Lewisburg Academy in West Virginia 1865-66; at Washington College 1866-68; at UVA 1872-73; Superintendent of Schools in Greenbrier County, West Virginia 1876-82; Democratic Representative of Greenbrier County in the West Virginia House of Delegates 1885-1909; Speaker of the House in 1885; owner and publisher of the Lewisburg "Greenbrier Independent" 1887-1917; Brigadier General and commanded West Virginia Division 1923-33. Died- Jan. 4, 1933; buried at the Old Stone Church in Lewisburg, West Virginia.

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century. The database also includes some historical Faculty and Board of Visitors members, as well as U. S. Army students sent to VMI for training during World Wars I and II.
