Biography & Genealogy: | Bernard Manuel Davis, Class of 1867. Born- Apr. 2, 1846. Matriculated from Tallahassee, FL. At VMI 3 1/2 months. Military Record: Enlisted May 13, 1862 in Richmond after attending the West Florida Institute (now Florida State University); joined Company E, 10th Virginia Cavalry (his father's regiment)for the war; Promoted to Corporal, but discharged on Dec. 13, 1862 to enter VMI (some records show other dates); left VMI on Dec. 5, 1863; on July 9, 1864, he enlisted as a Private in the 10th Virginia Cavalry (probably Company E); on horse detail July-August 1864; In Richmond hospital during December of 1864 due to a fever, but deserted on Jan. 16, 1865 and apparently rejoined his former company; admitted to a Pittsburgh hospital on Feb. 8, 1865, where he was captured on Apr. 3. Post War Career Admitted to the bar in Fernandina, FL in 1874; married Janie Dewson in 1875. Died- Jan. 1, 1881 in Fernandina, FL; buried in Cumberland Island, GA. |
