Biography & Genealogy: | James David Darden, Class of 1867: New Market Cadet; Private, Co. B. Genealogy: Born- April 10, 1845. Father- Richard J. Darden; Mother- Caroline F. Pope. Pat. Grandparents- unknown. Mat. Grandparents- unknown. Married- Mary Jane Harris, in 1875. Children- 1st: Newel Richard Darden; 2nd: Mary Carolyn Darden; 3rd: Minnie Newman Darden. Matriculated from Jerusalem (Now Courtland), VA. Military Record: Entered VMI Aug. 1, 1863; fought with Corps of Cadets at New Market as a Private in Company B; at New Market, he was wounded in the thigh, continued to follow the charge, and was wounded again in the left arm; Cadet Thomas G. Jefferson (1867, Died on the Field of Honor) put a bandage around the arm that probably saved his life; left VMI on Feb. 27, 1865; unofficial source says he served in Commissary Department in North Carolina and surrendered with Confederate forces there. Died- October 31, 1899, in Newsom, Va. |
