Biography & Genealogy: | Basil Gordon Dabney, Class of 1867. Born- Oct. 29, 1847. Matriculated from Charlottesville, VA. At VMI less than two months. Military Record: Entered VMI Jan. 3 1865 as a Third Classman (sophomore), left late Feb. 1865; Unofficial sources say he joined Captain J. H. Thompson's Company of Virginia Light Artillery (Portsmouth Artillery; Captain C. F. Grimes's Company) which was then disbanded for the winter; Reported to Richmond April 2, 1865 and found Company not yet reorganized; he and others of his company joined the 2d Virginia Cavalry; Mortally Wounded in Action in the right leg on Apr. 6, 1865 near Farmville. Died- Apr. 6, 1865; death hastened by intoxicated surgeon; wore VMI uniform while in the service of the Confederacy and is buried in it. |
