Biography & Genealogy: | Beverly Sydnor Crews, Class of 1867. New Market Cadet (Private, Co. D.). Genealogy: Born- December 17, 1846, in Belmont, Halifax County, Virginia. Father- John B. Crews; Mother- Fannie Sydnor; both parents were from Halifax County, VA. Paternal Grandfather- John B. Crews; Paternal Grandmother- Ann Bullock. Maternal Grandfather- William Sydnor; Maternal Grandmother- Susan Barksdale. Married- 1st: Georgian Cowen Woolfolk, October 1871; 2nd: Anna Flemming Cornick. Children- All from 1st Marriage; 1st: John Allen Crews (hosiery manufacturer in Chatham, VA); 2nd: Mamie Woolfolk (first wife of Dr. David B. Drewry, VMI Class of 1893); 3rd: Bessie Gordon (second wife of Dr. Drewry); 4th: Carry Leigh Crews. Academic record: Prior to attending VMI he was a student at the Danville (VA) Military Academy. He enrolled at VMI on January 16, 1864 and was a cadet until January 18, 1865, when he resigned to serve in Col. John S. Mosby's cavalry regiment (43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry). While at VMI he participated in the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. After the Civil War he attended the University of Virginia, 1865-1866. Career: tobacconist in Danville, VA, where he was president of the Chamber of Commerce. Died- July 1, 1896. |
