|Biography & Genealogy:||John Fletcher Early, Class of 1852: Born- Lynchburg, Virginia on June 7, 1830. Geneology: He was the son of John Early (1786-1873) a Bishop in the Methodist Church, and Elizabeth Rives. He worked for the Southern Methodist Church publishing house and was in charge of a branch office in New Orleans at the beginning of the Civil War. He married Eliza Bostick Early, with whom he had four children (Hardin, Lila, John and Margaret). Matriculated to VMI from Lynchburg, VA. At VMI 2 years. Military Record: Enlisted May 16, 1862 at Jackson, Mississippi for 3 years or durration of war with Captain C.E. Fenner's Battery of Louisiana Artillery; Unofficial source says he served as Ordinance Sergeant and 1st Sergeant; on roll of Prisioners of War surrendered by Lieutenant General R. Taylor on May 4, 1865 at Citronelle, Alabama, and paroled May 10, 1865 at Meridian, MS. Post War Career: Railroader. Died- Sep. 28, 1894 in Sanford, Florida. His diary (1849-1850) is in the VMI Archives.|
