Biography & Genealogy: | Wingfield John Richard, Class of 1866: Born- December 14, 1845. Matriculated from Charlottesville, Va. At VMI 8 months (entered as a sophomore). Military Record: At VMI July 1863-March 1864. Enlisted April 28, 1864 in Hanover County for war as Pvt, Company E, 2nd Va Cavalry (some records show other dates). Wounded in action (right lung). May 8, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House. In hospital (Charlottesville) or on wounded furlough until February 1865. Never completely recovered. Post War Career: Lawyer; farmer; public official. At UVa 1865-69 and 1871-72 (law). Member, county board of supervisors. Democrat. Represented Albemarle and Greene counties in Va Senate 1881-87; US Consul in Costa Rica; county treasurer 1889-1904; member, Va Corporation Commission. Methodist. Married Elizabeth Jane Watts, second wife Ida Ross Vest. Died- March 16, 1931 in Charlottesville, Va. |
