|Biography & Genealogy:||Henry Colgate Whitehead, Class of 1866. New Market Cadet. Born- July 23, 1845 in Norfolk, Va. Father- John Boswell Whitehead; Mother- Emily Arnold Herman. Pat. Grandfather- Nathan Colgate Whitehead; Pat. Grandmother- Elizabeth McPherson. Mat. Grandfather- Henry Herman; Mat. Grandmother- Emily Arnold. Married- Margaret Walke Taylor, daughter of Walter Herron Taylor and Cornelia Cowdery. Children- 1- Cornelia Wickham Whitehead Coupland, who married Rev. Robert S. Coupland. 2- Emily Arnold Whitehead Gamble, who married Rev. Edward W. Gamble. 3- Dr. John B. Whtehead, Ph.D. 4- Hugh Grigsby Whitehead, who married Rena Burwell. Entered VMI- Jan. 9, 1862; Left in April of 1865, but later made Honorary Graduate of Class of 1866. Civil War Service- Assigned to Special Duty in the office of post adjutant at VMI July 8, 1863; Private in Co. B of Corps of Cadets in the Battle of New Market, was wounded in left collar bone with a piece of shell, but did not realize the extent of his injury because of his excitement and so did not leave the battlefield. Remained with the Corps of Cadets until the end of the War. Career- Treasurer of Traction Company; Accountant. Died- April 19, 1920.|
