Married- Maria L. Hillsman (his cousin). Children- 1- Wayne Blankenship; 2- Otis Blankenship; 3- Grace Blankenship. [there were two other children, whose names are unknown]. VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 27, 1849; Graduated- July 5, 1852 standing 1st in a class of 24. Taught Math while a cadet, see below. Civil War Record: Enlisted April 19, 1861 at Lynchburg, Va.; Elected Captain of the "Lynchburg Rifles" which became Co. E 11th Va. Regiment June 3, 1861; Had been ill but rose from sick bed July 18, 1861 to lead his company at Blackburn's Ford, but broke and ran under fire; Resigned for health reasons Aug. 25, 1861; In 1863 and 1864 unsuccessfully sought appointment as Captain of engineers. Careers- Teacher; U.S. Coast Surveyor; Cadet Acting Assistant Professor of Math 1851-52; Professor of Math at Lynchburg College before the War; Taught Math and Military Tactics at Randolph Macon College 1862-64. Died in Mississippi shortly after the War. Exact date unknown.|
