Biography & Genealogy: | Sanford Bernard Skaggs, Class of 1866. New Market Cadet. Genealogy: Born- June 16, 1845. Lived in Blue Sulpher Springs, Va. (now W. Va.) Father- Edward R. Skaggs; Mother- Catherine Duffy. No information on grandparents. Never married, no children. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Jan. 10, 1862; had to repeat 4th Classman (Freshman) year; left in late 1864 but was made an Honorary Graduate of the class of 1866 for his service in the Battle of New Market. Civil War Record: Enlisted April 18, 1861 at Winchester as Captain in Co. B 17th Va. Cavalry; discharged from service to attend VMI in Jan. 1862; served as Private in Co. A of the VMI Corps of Cadets in the Battle of New Market, May 15, 1864; at a later date in 1864 enlisted at Greenbrier as Private in Co A. Lt. Col D. S. Hounshell's Battalion Va. Cavalry Partisan Rangers; Paroled April 25, 1865. Careers: Teacher. Died- May 18, 1868 of consumption. |
