Biography & Genealogy: | Samuel Read, Class of 1866: Born- September 1843. Matriculated from Lynchburg, Va. At VMI 3 months over 2 years (repeated freshman year). Military Record: At VMI May 29-November 5, 1862. Resigned for health reasons. Seems likely he was the "S.N. Reed," whose only record shows him a Private, Company D, 3rd Battalion Artillery, paroled at Staunton May 28, 1865, age 22. This otherwise unidentified unit was probabbly Capt J.J. Shoemaker's Company Horse Artillery (Beauregard Rifles; Lynchburg Beauregards; Beauregard Artillery; and Capt M.N. Moorman's Company). Post War Career: Farmer. Died- February 1876. |
