|Biography & Genealogy:||Walter Leake Moon, Class of 1866: Born- January 3, 1843. Matriculated from Halifax Court House, Virginia. At VMI 1 year. Military Record: Enlisted April 24, 1861 at Halifax Court House as Private, Company A, Maj E.B. Montague's Virginia Battalion. Company became Company A, 53rd Virginia. To Sergeant May 8, 1862. Discharged August 11 by order of Secretary of War. At VMI September 11, 1862-July 4, 1863. Resigned because of academic deficiency. Unofficial source says then spent brief time guarding conscripts and deserters. At Halifax on April 1, 1864 enlisted for war as Private, Company G, 6th Virginia Cavalry. Wounded in action May 7, 1864 at the Wilderness (lost left arm below elbbow). In hospital (Richmond, Danville). Retired August 30, 1864. Post War Career: Elected sheriff, Halifax County 1887. Married May H. Russell 1865. 2nd wife Eliza C. Carrington. Clerk; farmer; tobacco manufacturer; sheriff. Died- Decembber 30, 1909 near South Boston.|
