Howard, who represented Jones Co. in the state legislature; Mother: Sarah Anne Williams of Beaufort Co., NC; no information about grandparents; his great-grandfather, John Howard, came from England. VMI Record: Matriculated at VMI on September 27, 1862, from Beaufort Co, NC, listing his guardian as Allen [Grist?] of Washington, NC (James Howard, his father, died sometime during his childhood and the family moved to Washington); did not graduate; resigned his cadetship on November 17, 1863 to enter military service. Civil War Record: enlisted April 1, 1864 as a Private, Company B, 3rd Battalion North Carolina Light Artillery (Capt. W. B. Badham's Co., also knows as 1st Battalion NC Lt. Artillery); paroled May 1, 1865 at Greensboro, NC. Career: Farmer & merchant. Marriage: Married Miss Cobbs (first name not in our records), a daughter of Dr. Richard Cobbs of Craven Co., NC; the following children were living in 1909-- Richard, Elizabeth, Mary, Olivia, Sarah. Death: On October 4, 1886 he received grave injuries from a cotton gin accident; his arm was amputated on October 5 and he died the same day; buried LaGrange NC, subsequently his body was moved to the cemetery in Washington, NC, his boyhood home. |
