Biography & Genealogy: | Grant James P, Class of 1866: Born- March 13, 1845. Matriculated from Richmond, Va. At VMI 7 months (repeated freshman year). Entered VMI January 1, 1862. Dismissed and reinstated twice before final dismissal. Tried April 1863 to secure cadetship in RACS but no vacancy. Military Record: Enlisted May 28, 1863 at Culpeper for war as Private, Company A, 10th Va Cavalry. Detailed as clerk for Major Gen J.E.B. Stuart late 1863. AWOL on July-August 1864 roll. In hospital (Richmond) August 2-November 2 1864 (rheumatism). Captured at Amelia Court House April 5, 1865. Held at Point Lookout, Maryland. Released on oath June 5, 1865. Post War Career: Shot Pollard, HR (Class of 1851), (no known service) in 1868. Acquitted (probably on the grounds that killing was justified). Died- May 28, 1883 in Richmond, Va. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond. |
