|Biography & Genealogy:||Born- July 4, 1847. Matriculated from Scottsville, Va. At VMI 3 months. Military Record: Entered Confederate (States) service June, 30 (or 24 or 28) 1864 as 2nd Lt, Company B, 1st Battalion Virginia Reserves. Tendered resignation July 19, 1864 "for the purpose of going into more active service." His commander wanted it disapproved on grounds that boys under 18 should not be allowed to go into active service "and in no event should they be allowed to join an irregular partisan command such as Mosby's." War Dept accepted resignation July 25 under the "special circumstances" of the case. Unofficial sources say he joined Col. J.S. Mosby's Regiment Virginia Cavalry (43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry). Post War Career: Farmer. Brother of Henry Gantt, Class of 1851.|
