Biography & Genealogy:Andrew Jackson Davis, Class of 1866: New Market Cadet; Private, Co. C. Genealogy: Born- Mar. 9, 1843, in Mecklenburg Co., Va. Father- John Davis; Mother- Mary A. Pennington Davis. Pat. Grandparents- unknown. Mat. Grandparents- unknown. Married- Annie Lieu Scott. Children- 1st: Mary P. Davis; 2nd: E.L. Faulkner; 3rd: Andrew Jackson Davis; 4th: John Archer Davis; 5th: George W. Davis. Matriculated from Palmer Springs, VA. At VMI 1 year, 9 months over 3 years. Military Record: Enlisted as a Private in Company B, 56th Virginia in 1861; was discharged due to ill health on Nov. 26, 1861; Matriculated to VMI on Feb. 16, 1863 into Company C, but fought at New Market with an artillery detachment; left VMI on Feb. 25, 1865; unofficial source indicates he was appointed a First Lieutenant and assigned to the army in the Carolinas (probably Col J.G. Tucker's Confederate Regiment[1st Foreign Battalion, 1st ForeignInfantry, 1st Confederate Army]). Career: Farmer; no official record of any Post-VMI military service found. Died- October 5, 1915 in Oakland, Va.

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era.
