|Biography & Genealogy:||Richard Booker Chaffin, Class of 1866: Born- Nov. 29, 1844. Matriculated from Richmond, Va. At VMI 2 years. Military Record: At Hamden-Sydney College in 1861. Entered VMI Jan. 1862. Sick much of 1862. Left VMI on Sep. 22, 1863. Joined cavalry forces under Col. W. L. Jackson as Private. Appointed acting Adjutant, 19th Va. Cavalry in Dec. 1863. Wounded in action (ankle) at Jackson River, Dec. 1863. Disabled from field duty. On crutches for the rest of his life. Wrote Sec. of War on March 15, 1864, "I feel...that I am able to render some service to the Country and not being willing to be an idle spectator of our national struggle I respectfully apply for the position of Drill Master." Appointed Drill Master April 1, 1864. Assigned as Enrolling Officer, Powhatan Co., Va. Signed oath May 2, 1865. Post War Career: Farmer; Real Estate; Public Official. Married Sarah Harvie in 1866. Moved to Richmond in 1873. On Richmond Board of Alderman for 4 years. Episcopal. Died- June 26, 1902.|
