Paternal Grandparents- John Carter and Mary Herndon, both born Spotsylvania Co., VA. Maternal Grandparents- Joseph Slaughter (b. Culpeper Co., VA) and Susan or Suzanna Sutton (b. Bedford Co., VA). Early Education and VMI Record: Secondary education at New London Academy; matriculated at VMI from New London, VA on September 15, 1862; resigned July 4, 1863 because of academic deficiencies. Civil War service: Enlisted April 22, 1864, for war at Richmond, Va., as Private, Co. B, 10th Battalion Va. Heavy Artillery (Capt. J. D. Hensley's Co.)(bounty). On receipt roll for clothing 3rd quarter, 1864. Post War Career: Farmer, Bedford Co., VA. Marriage: to Ocie Lee, Dec. 7, 1871. Eight children: 1. Edward Carpenter 2. Minor Lee 3. Ellie Price 4.
