Paternal Grandparents: Charles Gorham Barney and Avis Macy. Maternal Grandfather- Benjamin Corliss; Mat. Grandmother- Phoebe (maiden name unknown). Married: Sallie Roane Norvell (b. 1849, Lynchburg, VA; d. 1932, Mobile, AL) on October 23, 1867. Children: Oscar Norvell Barney (b. 1889 d. 1959), William H. Barney (b. 1875 d. 1881). VMI Record: Matriculated January 1, 1862 from Mobile, AL; total attendance time 2 years and 9 months over 4 years; repeated third (sophomore) class; fought in the Battle of New Market as a Private, Company D, Corps of Cadets; dropped from rolls as of January 5, 1865 after failure to return (AWOL). Career: Merchant in family firm in Mobile, AL (hardware & farm implements; original name Barney Brothers, est. circa 1840 and operated into the 20th century; underwent many name changes but all included surname Barney).
