Biography & Genealogy: | Freeman V. Walker, Class of 1880 (non-graduate). Genealogy: Born Augusta, Georgia, July 20, 1860. Father: Maj. General William H. T. Walker, born Augusta, Georgia, 1816; West Point Class of 1837; KIA at Battle of Atlanta July 22, 1864. Mother: Mary Townsend, born Albany, New York, 1828; died Albany, 1868; both parents buried at Walker Family Cemetery, Augusta, GA. Maternal Grandparents: Isaiah Townsend & Hannah Townsend (they were cousins); both born Long Island, NY. Paternal Grandparents: Freeman Walker (born Virginia) & Mary Garlington Creswell (born Georgia). Education: Enrolled at VMI in the fall of 1876 and attended for two years; did not graduate. Subsequently attended the University of Virginia from which he received the M.D. degree in 1881. Career: Physician. Entered U. S. Army as 1st Lieut. and Assistant Surgeon in July 1886; retired from Army in 1895. Lived in Bluffton, South Carolina. Marriage: Mary Ellen McAlpin, daughter of James Wallace McAlpin of Savannah, Georgia, in 1882. One child died in infancy. Died: January 21, 1933; buried in family plot (includes graves of wife and infant child) at Bluffton Cemetery, Bluffton, SC. |
