Biography & Genealogy: | Williamson Matthew White, Class of 1865; 1864-MS: Born- April 24, 1845. Matriculated from New Market, Va. At VMI 5 1/2 months over 2 years (repeated freshman year). Military Record: Enlisted August 13, 1862 at New Market as Pvt, Company F, 1st Va Cavalry. (May have served with unit earlier.) On detached service January-February 1864. Present for duty on all other extant rolls until late August 1864 (last on file). Unofficial source says wounded in action at Yellow Tavern May 1864 and two other (unspecified) times; captured and recaptured December 1862 at Stafford Church. Paroled May 9, 1865 in Winchester. Post War Career: Farmer; public official. Mayor of New Market 1887-1904. Died- September 13, 1930 in New Market. Buried Lutheran Church Cemetery there. |
