Biography & Genealogy: | James Howard Whitehurst, Class of 1865: Genealogy: Born- Sept. 27, 1843 in Princess Ann Courthouse. Va. Father- James Murden Whitehurst; Mother- Delia Kellum Drayton. Pat. Grandfather- Daniel Whitehurst; Pat. Grandmother- Amy Lovett. Mat. Grandfather- James Drayton; Mat. Grandmother- Lilly Drayton (maiden name unknown unless it was also Drayton) No records of whether he was married or had children. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 21, 1860; Resigned in early 1862 to enlist in Confederate Army. Military Record: Served as Drill Master for VMI Corps of Cadets stationed in Richmond in spring of 1861; unofficial source says he remained in Richmond sick when the rest of the Corps returned to VMI; Enlisted March 8th, 1862 at Tanner's Creek Crossroads as Private in Co. G, 16th Va. Regiment; soon appointed 1st Sergeant; In hospital in Richmond in May of 1862; Wounded in action at Malvern Hill; Absent, sick in fall of 1862; wounded in action May 13, 1864 at Spotsylvania (unofficial source says he was wounded in the head); Returned to duty Nov. 30, 1864; Captured near Amelia Court House April 6, 1865; Held at Point Lookout, Md.; Released on oath, June 3, 1865. Unofficial source says he never recovered from his war wounds. Careers: Apparently unable to engage in business because of his wounds. He was cared for by a sister. Died- June 10, 1912 (Some earlier sources say he died in 1893, but a note from his niece was posted that he died in 1912). |
