Biography & Genealogy: | Vandevanter Townsend Heaton, Class of 1865: Born- May 1, 1844. Matriculated from Hamilton, Va. At VMI 2 1/2 months. Military Record: Served in unknown unit fall 1861 before entered VMI. Withdrew because of bad health. Enlisted November 1, [62?] at Gaines Cross Roads for war as Pvt, Company A, 35th Battalion Va Cavalry. Detailed as courier at Brig Headquarters August 10, 1864. In February 1865 transferred to Col J.S. Mosby's Regiment Va Cavalry (43rd Battalion Va Cavalry). Paroled April 20, 1865. Post War Career: Farmer; public official; railroad agent. Married Annie R. Janney 1871. Deputy sheriff; treasurer, Loudoun County (latter in 1896). Died- August 11, 1926. Buried Union Cemetery, Leesburg. |
