Biography & Genealogy: | Hampton Bigelow Nicholas, Class of 1865: Born- January 11, 1844. Matriculated from New Canton, Va. At VMI 1 year. Military Record: Served with Company K, 4th Virginia Cavalry 1861. At VMI January 14-July 21, 1862. Rejoined 4th Virginia Cavalry September 25 (or 21) September 1862. Private. Captured, Kelly's Ford March 14, 1863. Held at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC. Exchanged March 29, 1863. Transferred to Company C, 44th Virginia April 1863. Joined new unit October 30, 1863. Detailed as clerk in Richmond November 1, 1863-February 29, 1864. Detailed to Confederate States Navy April 20-September 13, 1864. Ordered back to Richmond and was probably the "H.B. Nicholas" on extra duty as 1st Class Clerk in Provost Marshal's Office (records show October 1864 and February 1865). Post War Career: Farmer; civil engineer. Died- June 9, 1909 in Buckingham County. Buried Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond. |
