Biography & Genealogy:John Welch, Class of 1847: Born- June 23, 1827 in Madison Co. Va. Full name John Welch. Sometimes sited as John P. Welch since his brothers had nicknamed him "Pop". Father- Col. Nathaniel J. Welch; Mother- Viranda T. Newman. Pat. Grandfather- Maj. Nathaniel Welch; Pat. Grandmother- Elizabeth [maiden name unknown]. Mat. Grandfather- Thomas Newman; Mat. Grandmother- Lucy Barbour. Married- Laura Newman daughter of James Barbour Newman and Sarah Battle Fitzhugh. Laura was most likely a cousin to John Welch, but marriages between cousins were fairly common in that time period. Children- Sallie Fitzhugh Welch who married a Mr. Parham. Entered VMI July 8, 1844; Graduated July 5, 1847 (Also a graduate of the University of Va.) Pre-War Career- Lawyer, Captain of the Virginia Militia. Civil War Service- Capt. Co. A of the 7th Va. Infantry C.S.A. Post-War Career- Farmer. Died- July 9, 1879.
