Paternal Grandfather- Hugh Smith, b. Knutsford, England; Paternal Grandmother- Elizabeth Watson, b. Armagh, Ireland. Maternal Grandfather- Isaac Hite Williams; Maternal Grandmother- Lucy Coleman Slaughter. Never married; no children. Education: Matriculated at VMI on August 14, 1844; resigned January 27, 1846; granted honorary graduate status July 2, 1874. Military Record: U. S. Army- Appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 8th U.S. Infantry, March 8, 1847; 2nd Lieut., U.S. Voltigeurs, April 9, 1847; mustered out August 31, 1848. Confederate Army- In 1861 returned from West to join CSA; appointed Lt. Engineers [date unknown]; Captain by May 2, 1864; served in Richmond area 1863-1865, in charge of pontoon service. Career: Engineer. Highly regarded engineer in Washington, California and Oregon; designed construction of locks and canal for Willamette River falls; engineer on construction of Western Pacific Railroad; on Board of Railroad Commissioners for State of California; chief engineer State Harbor Commission (CA); supervised new water system for Portland, OR.
