|Biography & Genealogy:||St. George Tucker Mason, Class of 1865 (1864-MS). Born- July 1, 1844. Matriculated from Hicksford (now Emporia), Va. At VMI 1 year and 1 month (repeated freshman year). Studied in Germany and France. Civil War Record: Broke thigh. Badly set so one leg shorter than other. Enlisted September 1, (some records show August) 1862 for 3 years at Hicksford as Private, Company F, 12th Virginia ($50 bounty). Transferred to Company H, 13th Virginia Cavalry spring 1863. Wounded in action (right thigh), Hanovertown, Pennsylvania June 30, 1863 (Gettysburg Campaign). Detailed as courier for Maj Gen (later Lt Gen) W. Hampton late 1864 and probably until April 1865. Paroled April 29. 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina with Army of Tennessee. Post War Career: Commissioned into French Foreign Legion and died (dysentery) while commanding regiment near Tonkin, China, July 23, 1884. His remains were buried in Algeria.|
