|Biography & Genealogy:||Daniel S. Kaufman, Class of 1865: Born: 1845. Matriculated from Washington, Tx. At VMI 1 year (entered as a 5th year freshman). His father died in 1851, and he went by his grandfather's name of "Richardson" while cadet. Later resumed father's name. Military Career: Left on guard at VMI April 1861. May have been the "Samuel Richardson" who enlisted August 6, 1861 at Camp Maurice for 1 year as Private, Company E, 5th Virginia Cavalry (12 months) and who is whown as Present For Duty on extant rolls. On May 18, 1863 at San Augustin, Tx "Daniel K. Richardson" enlisted for 3 years as Private, Company G, 3rd Virginia Cavalry (so the records read, but may be clerical error for 3rd Texas Cavalry--if so, probably the unit known as "3rd Texas Cavalry Regiment, Arizona Brigade"). This man transferred March 1, 1864 to Capt J.J. Edward's Company, Col J.W. Well's Regiment Texas Cavalry. (Identification of company and regiment not certain.) "D.S. Kaufman" is shown on March 10, 1865 record as Private, Company B, Col D.S. Terry's Regiment Texas Cavalry. Absent without leave then (only record). Post War Career: Farmer; planter. VMI man reported to have become addicted to drugs. Died- June 3, 1914.|
