|Biography & Genealogy:||Hopkins Samuel Coffman, Class of 1865: Born- July 16, 1845. Matriculated from Harrisonburg, Va. At VMI 2 years (entered as a sophomore, repeated same year). Left VMI July 4, 1863 (academic deficienes. Military Record: Enlisted August 1, 1863 in Rockingham County for 3 years as Private, Captain J.H. McNeill's Company Va Cavalry, Partisan Rangers. Captured September 10, 1863 while on detached service. May well be the "Samuel C. Hopkins" whose records are filed with those of the 7th Va Cavalry as Private, Company F of that regiment who was captured at Moorfield September 10 (or 8), 1863 and held at Point Lookout, Md until exchanged March 10, 1864. (Captured CS Rangers often gave false units of assignments to US authorities.) VMI man admitted to hospital in March 1864 (debility) and furloughed March 18, 1864. Died- March 31, 1864.|
