|Biography & Genealogy:||Thomas Clifford Dudley, Class of 1865: Born- unknown. Matriculated from King and Queen Courthouse. At VMI 6 months, leaving to enlist in the Confederate Army. Military Record: Enlisted at Richmond on July 10, 1862 as a Private in Captain J. Pelham's Company of Virginia Horse Artillery (Captain D. Shank's Company; Captain P.P. Johnston's Company; Captain J. Breathed's Company); discharged Aug. 7, 1862 as a minor; enlisted again on July 26, 1863 as a Private, Shank's Company of Virginia Horse Artillery; on Jan. 9, 1863, Pelham praised his "truly gallant conduct and high soldierly bearing" and pronounced him qualified to command a company; on Sep. 16, 1863, he requested a commission in a new unit of of cavalry or mounted infantry; appointed 2d Lieutenant, cavalry, and enrolling officer on Oct. 26, 1863; resigned May 28, 1864; assigned May 30, 1864 as a Private to the 5th Virginia Cavalry; Mortally Wounded in Action June 11, 1864 at Trevillian Station (leg amputated). Died- July 9, 1864 at Trevilian Station.|
