|Biography & Genealogy:||William Buchanan Conway, Class of 1865: Born- 3 January 1845. Matriculated from Rochelle. At VMI for 1 year. Military Record: Enlisted 1 February 1863 at Madison Court House as a Pvt, Company C, 4th Virginia Cavalry. Detailed fall 1863 as courier for Brig Gen W.C. Wickham. Made Cpl 20 January 1864. Wounded in action (in the hand and knee) 9 May 1864 at Spotsylvania. Dispatch bearer April 1865 and not at Appomattox. Signed parole 1 May 1865 at Summit Point, WV. Post War Career: Physician. Unofficial sources say he obtained his MD in 1869 from Washington University in Baltimore, Maryland. Practiced in Rockingham County and as Surgeon at Virginia A&M (now Virginia Tech) from 1875-1889. Moved to Athens, GA in the early 1890s. Married first wife, Julia Ellen Thomas, in 1870. Married second wife, Mrs. Lee DuBose Armstrong, in 1918. He was a Presbyterian and a Democrat. Died- 6 July 1920 in College Park, GA. He is buried in West View Cemetery in Blacksburg, VA.|
