Biography & Genealogy: | Venable Clement Read, Class of 1864-MS: Born- 1840. Matriculated from Farmville, Va. At H-S 1853-58 (A.B., A.M.). At UVa 1860-61. At VMI 7 weeks. Military Record: Enlisted September 23, 1861 for 1 year at Camp Bartow in Company I, 23rd Va. "Amanuensis" (clerk) for regiment on February 1862 return. To Sgt april 21, 1862. Detailed as hospital steward July 28, 1862. Transferred March 24, 1864 to Company H, 1st CS Engineers. Appointed 2nd Lt, Company B October 28, 1864 (date of rank Ocotber 2). Wounded in action and captured at High Bridge April 7, 1865. On list of paroled POWs at Burksville Junction April 14-15, April 1865. Post War Career: Lived in Va and Florida. Teacher; farmer. Died- May 9, 1899 near Montgomery, Al. |
