Biography & Genealogy:Slaughter Mercer, Class of 1864-MS: Born- February 25, 1844. Matriculated from Orange Court House, Va. At VMI 3 weeks. Military Record: Enlisted at Richmond March 20, 1862 as 5th Sgt, Capt C.W. Fry's Company Virginia Light Artillery (Orange Artillery; Capt T.J. Peyton's Company Virginia Light Artillery). Almost certainly the "M. Slaughter" elected 2nd Lt, Maj R.C.M Page's Battalion CS Artillery February 9, 1863. (Fry's Company part of battalion). Lt on February 1863 roll. Horse killed in action at Spotsylvania May 12, 1864. On detached service Febryary 1865 probably as Acting Assistant Quarter Master. Post War Career: railroad passenger agent. Died- May 10, 1897 of paralysis in Richmond.
