|Biography & Genealogy:||William Lewis Randolph, Class of 1864-MS: Born- December 20, 1841. Matriculated from Keswick Depot, Va. At VMI 1 month. At UVa 1860-61. Military Record: Enlisted April 17, 1861 at Charlottesville as Private, Capt E.S. Hutter's Company (the "Southern Guard"). At VMI after company disbanded. Helped organize, elected 2nd Lt of, and on July 22, 1861 entered service at Charlottesville for 1 year with Company H, 57th Virginia. On recruiting duty February 1862. Acting brigade Ordnance Officer spring 1862. Not re-elected at re-organization May 7, 1862. Relived from duty May 8. Appointed 1st Lt, Artillery May 9, 1862 (date of rank May 1). Ordnance Officer on staffs of Brig Gens L.A. Armistead, S.M. Barton, and G.H. Steuart, and Maj Gen G.W.C. Lee. In hospital (Charlottesville) August-September 1863 ("Lousilitis") and Ocotber 1863 ("Febris Remittens"). To Captain March 1, 1865 (date of rank January 7). Captured at Sayler's Creek April 6, 1865. Held at Old Capitol Prison, Washington DC and Johnson's Island, Ohio. Released June 9, 1865. Post War Career: Farmer. Died: June 7, 1892. Nephew of CS Brig Gen and Secretary of War G.W. Randolph; great-grandson of US President Thomas Jefferson.|
