Biography & Genealogy: | James Stanley Newman, Class of 1864-MS: Born- December 11, 1836. Matriculated from Orange County, Va. At UVa 1856-58. At VMI 3 weeks. Military Record: Enlisted April 17, 1861 at Gordonsville for 1 year as Private, Company C, 13th Virginia. To Sergeant October 31, 1861. To Company A June 1, 1862. Unofficial source says also served in Capt C.F. Fry's Company Virginia Light Artillery (Orange Artillery, Capt T.J. Peyton's Company Virginia Light Artillery) and in 1864 with Georgia Militia until discharged for health reasons. No official record of any post-13th Virginia service found. Post War Career: Married Elberta Lewis "Editing clerk" Georgia Department of Agriculture 1875-83. Professor of Agriculture at what is now Auburn University (Alabama) 1883-91 and at Clemson University (South Carolina) 1891-1905 (where a campus building is named for him). Died- Walhalla, South Carolina May 10, 1910. |
