|Biography & Genealogy:||John Scott Morson (Class of 1864 Military Science/attended 1861). Genealogy: Born Fredericksburg, VA in 1842. Father- Arthur Alexander Morson (b. 1803 d. 1864); Mother- Maria Martin Scott (b. 1814 d. 1894). Pat. Grandfather- Alexander Morson (b. 1759 d. 1822); Pat. Grandmother- Anne Casson Alexander (b. 1781 d. 1831). Mat. Grandfather- Judge John Scott (b. 1781 d. 1850); Mat. Grandmother- Elizabeth B. Pickett (b. 1788 d. 1862). VMI Record: Enrolled June 4, 1861 for military training only; attended 4 weeks. Prior to attending VMI he had been a student at the University of Virginia. Military Record: Unofficial source says he was Capt/volunteer aide to BG (later LtGen) John A. Early, 1861-1862; may have been the "John S. Morson" paid as a QM Dept. clerk in June 1863; may have been the 21 year old who enlisted 16 June 1863 at Richmond as PVT, Co. E, 3d Va Local Defense Troops and was discharged 18 SEP 1863 having been elected Lt. of Engineers; Acting Lt. and Asst. Engr on staff of Maj. Gen. George E. Pickett; absent sick Oct. 1864; retired to Invalid Corps 31 Oct. 1864 due to poor health; healthy by March 1865 and requested assignment to post at Lynchburg. Surrendered self at Franklin Court House 19 May 1865 and paroled. Post-war: Practiced law in Richmond, VA; never married; died in Kentucky on May 27, 1886. Other: Brother of WA Morson (VMI 1864); brother-in-law of Scott Shipp (VMI 1859 & 2nd Superintendent); several cousins attended VMI.|
