Biography & Genealogy: | Jones Sydney Overton, Class of (1864-MS): Born- February 24, 1844. Matriculated from Petersburg, Va. At VMI 3 weeks. At Hampden-Sydney College 1860-61. Military Record: Enlisted October 17, 1861 at Petersburg for 1 year as Private in unit that became Company C, 18th Battalion Va Heavy Artillery (Cockade Mounted Battery; Capt G.V. Rambaut's Copmany; Capt B.J. Black's Company). Sergeant late 1861. Private spring 1862. Transferred May 14, 1862 to Company E, 12th Va. Wounded in action September 14, 1862 at Crampton's Gap. Detailed to duty with Conscript Bureau spring-summer 1863. Detailed for duty with Provost Marshal, Maj Gen (later Lt Gen) R.H. Anderson's division late 1863. Transferred to Capt W.P. Carter's Company Va Light Artillery (King William Artillery) early 1864. Appointed acting Ordnance Sergeant for battalion. Paroled at Appomattox. Post War Career: Journalist.
