Biography & Genealogy: | Eugene Grant DeJarnette, Class of 1864MS: Born- Aug. 22, 1843. Matriculated from Bowling Green, VA. At VMI 2 weeks. Military Record: entered service and elected 2d Lieutenant, Company H, 47th Virginia on Mar. 7, 1862 at Fredericksburg; promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 10, 1862 (some records give other dates for both grades); absent from duty due to illness from summer to early fall, 1862; resigned Mar. 1, 1863 and became a Captain, 2d Company, Captain J.F. Milligan's Independent Signal Corps; captured June 14, 1864 at Coggins Point; charged with spying; Confederate authorities threatened retaliation if he was not treated as a Prisioner of War; exchanged in the Fall of 1864; absent due to illness again during the latter part of 1864; on list of paroled POWs on May 28, 1865. Post War Career: at University of Virginia 1865-66; Lawyer. Died Richmond, VA 1914. |
